KUALA LUMPUR (June 21, 2012): Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris’ (UPSI) student Adam Adli Abdul Halim today obtained permission from the High Court to challenge the university’s decision to suspend him for allegedly breaking its regulations.
Judge Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim granted leave for a judicial review filed by Adam Adli after hearing submissions from both parties in chambers.
Adam Adli’s counsel Fadiah Nadwa Fikri told reporters that the judge granted the leave on grounds that the application had merits and was not frivolous.
She said the court would fix the date of the hearing of the judicial review proper later.
On April 17, Adam Adli, 23, a fifth semester student in Teaching English as a Second Language, filed the application naming the university, its disciplinary appeal committee and the government as respondents.
He is seeking the High Court to quash the appeal committee’s decision on March 8 dismissing his appeal against UPSI’s disciplinary committee’s order to suspend him.
On Jan 9, the disciplinary committee ordered a three-semester suspension against Adam Adli which will end in September next year.
In the application, Adam Adli said he was found guilty by the disciplinary committee for tarnishing the university’s name and disrupting public peace and safety.
