KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 20, 2011): There is an urgent need for the government to set up a royal commission to investigate the death of Customs Department assistant director Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamad at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office here on April 6.
His cousin, Makhtar Mansor, 53, who was representing the deceased’s family, said the request was made because Ahmad Sarbaini’s family could not accept the Coroner’s Court decision on Sept 29 that the death was a misadventure.
He said the family would submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, demanding that the commission be set up.
“His family cannot accept the decision at all. We believe there is foul play and we want the commission to investigate the case again,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.
Also present were Ahmad Sarbaini’s parents, Mohammad Itam Taib, 73, and Aishah Abdul Raof, 73, and family members.
Makhtar said among the reasons the family rejected the court’s decision was because of the evidence of a police expert who did not dispute that a round-the-clock closed-circuit television camera recording was erased by someone with the relevant skills.
“It is difficult to believe that the deceased who voluntarily went to the MACC office then, seemingly, left the office through the window on the third floor.
“There was also evidence that MACC officers had acted aggressively towards him (Ahmad Sarbaini), which includes the seizure of his handphone.
“Our family wants justice and transparent investigation on his death. We want to clear his name through a just and transparent investigation by the MACC,” he added. – Bernama
