Peaceful protest is a vital part of a democratic society and has a very long and respected tradition in Malaysia. Just look back at the historic protests against the Malayan Union and more importantly the All Malaya HARTAL in 1947.

It is a very powerful campaign tool and many of the rights and freedoms we enjoy today were gained because people were prepared to go out on the streets and protest. The right to peaceful protest is enshrined in the Malaysian Constitution and the UDHR and numerous other International Human Rights instruments. And no IGP or Home Minister can unilaterally decree like a feudal Sultan that our right to peaceful assembly is suspended.

Over the next few days and weeks leading up to BERSIH – don’t worry too much and go with the flow. BERSIH is confident that it will have the required numbers – PAS, PKR, DAP, PSM, all NGOs involved and others are working hard to mobilise their members and the public.

Just look at the Arab Spring. After decades of subjugation and dictatorial rule under the patronage of the US – dictators like Mubarak, Ben Ali etc are running for their lives and hiding. The same will happen to the likes of Najib, Muhyiddin, Ibrahim “Katak” Ali and Mahathir.

Do not be concerned. We will weather the water cannons, tear gas, beating, arrest and detention. LFL is commited to BERSIH and we will do all we can to challenge the police, AG’s Chambers and the Kangaroo Courts.

Wear BERSIH’s T-Shirt and headband proudly.

We shall overcome.

Lawyers for Liberty will be having a workshop on the “People’s Right to March and facing the police”.
