KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyer N. Surendran has claimed trial to a charge of sedition over a press statement made in connection with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s second sodomy case.

Surendran, 48, was charged on Tuesday at the Sessions Court with releasing a seditious press statement entitled “Court of Appeal’s Fitnah 2 written judgement is flawed, defensive and insupportable”.

The offence under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 is alleged to have occurred at the MalaysiaKini offices at Jalan Kemuja, Bangsar Utama here at 3.40pm on April 18.

When read the charges, Surendran said the accusations were political and without basis.

Deputy public prosecutor Syed Faisal Syed Amir urged the court to set bail at RM10,000 while Surendran’s counsel M. Puravelen pleaded for RM3000 bail.

Judge Zarol Rashid Hussain set bail at RM5000 with one surety and fixed Sept 18 for next mention.
