4 June 2019
We refer to the announcement today that Latheefa Koya, co-founder and Director of Lawyers for Liberty joined the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) as its new Chief Commissioner. Latheefa’s long standing track record as a human rights lawyer and activist will serve the MACC well in its effort to eradicate corruption. We congratulate her on this important appointment and wish her all success in the battle against corruption.
Following Latheefa’s resignation from LFL to take up her new appointment, we are pleased to announce that human rights lawyer Melissa Sasidaran has been appointed as the new Director of Lawyers for Liberty. She was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2010 and recently completed her LLM in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice at SOAS University of London in 2018.
Prior to her appointment, she was the Legal and Campaign Coordinator at LFL. She has represented numerous civil society and then opposition politicians/activists in urgent arrests, remand hearings and criminal cases in court, particularly for offences under the Sedition Act 1948, Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA), Penal Code, and Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
